In 1986 the Landmark Society deposited checks totaling exactly $8,240 into its savings account and exactly $2,010 into its checking account. In 1987, after the society requested a statement of its 1986 deposits, the bank reported a combined total of exactly $ 16,250, including $482 in interest, as deposited in 1986 into the society's two accounts, a figure that the society's treasurer could not immediately explain.

Which of the following statements about the society's accounts, if true, best explains the bank's unexpectedly high deposit report?

(A)The interest rate on the savings account was raised from 5 percent in 1985 to 5.5 percent in 1986.
(B)At the end of 1985 the checking account had a balance of exactly $6,000.
(C)In 1986 most of the money deposited into the savings account was later transferred into the checking account, and transfers of funds into an account are counted as deposits into that account.
(D)In 1986 the society had unusually low expenses, so more than 40 percent of the funds deposited into the checking account remained in the account at the end of the year.
(E)The society's membership grew by 40 percent in 1986, so revenue from checks received for membership dues, all of which the society deposited into the savings account, was unexpectedly high that year.
