OGの回答を読んでも理解できなかった問題です。

正解は(A)です。解説でBに関して、前の節でAustraliaがない時代
のことを述べているから、itが指し示せるものがない、という
解説がいまいち飲みこめません。
(D)(E)はwhat wasがwordyだそうですが、(A)のAustralia was
Australia の表現のほうが意味不明ぽく感じられます・・・
