確かに（B）の方がよいような気はしますが（A）も悪くないように思えるのですが。

(B)はthan that in wheat という表現がrice has a proteinとの比較において、しっくりとこないのですが、こういう表現もありなのでしょうか？

解説を見ると、spawnedと(A)extendingがパラレルでfiligreeを修飾するとあります。
(B)extendsがis とパラレルと考えることはできないのでしょうか？
filigreeとspawnedの間にもof mushrooms and rootlike tentaclesがはさまれているのでextendingによるうしろからの形容詞的修飾というのが分かりにくいような気がします。
結局は意味で考えていくと正解の通りとなるのでしょうか。もし文法的に説明がつくような事項等がございましたら教えてください。
