tens of thousands of ideographic characters( 何万という表意文字 )が、each character で言い換えられた瞬間からその後は、単数で受けなければならないのではないでしょうか？ ですから、each と同格の composition や each を受ける所有格の its は単数にするべきだと思います。
each character 以下と、 Chinese 〜 ideographic characters の主節部分のつながりについては確かに説明が難しいと思います。
意味としては、「現在も使われている表記システムの中で最も古くからある中国語は、何万という表意文字からできており、その文字のひとつひとつが、それ自身の正方形のフレームの中の細密な習字の構造となっている」です。
