TOEFL文法問題　質問です(再送)

下記TOEFL PPからの2題、教えてください。

1題目：
The Mississippi riverboat, which (evolved) from simpler (steamship) of the early 1800's, became the (dominant) form of (passenger transport) on the Mississippi River.
→解答は steamshipとのことですが、理由がさっぱりわかりません。

2題目：
Stars provided early (astronomer) with a (reference) system for measuring (the motions) of planets, the Moon, and the Sun.
→解答は astronomerとのことですが、これも理由がさっぱりわかりません。
