<Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single componet of municipal trash, many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash diposal.>

(A) ditto
(D) All kinds of paper are the biggest single components of municipal trash, and so many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal.

Although I may partially agree with you, I cannot totally.

First, you mean that because "there are only main clauses", this sentences is incorrect. But it is not correct, because it is completely no problem that "there are only main clauses".

Second, you might consider "and so many ..." as "so many ...". But in this case, "so" means "therefore" and thus the "so" is correct.

Finally, however, you said that "single" means singlar, so "single components" is illogical. In this point, I may agree with you.

However, I am wondering whether "single componets" is gramatically correct or not.

Thanks,
